Nike revive an OG early 90s iteration of the Tinker Hatfield silhouette with the Nike Air Max 90 Eggplant trainer.

With 2020 marking the 30th anniversary of the Air Max 90, we’ve seen a constant flow of new colourways hit the shoe this year. Now, Nike’s taking us back to the early 90’s by re-releasing one of the first ever Air Max 90 women’s exclusive colourways. Now known as the Air Max 90, they were originally dropped as the Air Max 3, being the third in the Air Max series, following the Air Max 1 and Air Max Light. Nike’s upcoming iteration of the sneaker is coming as a women’s exclusive in the classic “Eggplant” colourway from 1991 in true early 90’s fashion. The Nike Air Max 90 Eggplant trainer was one of the first initial drops for the silhouette in the 1991, releasing alongside the iconic Infrared and Laser Blue colourways.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a retro re-release of this pair, with the ‘Coral Rose’ rendition releasing back in 2003, the Air Max 90 Eggplant trainer is long overdue. Many Air Max lovers will be getting excited to see these in the hope that more OG AM colourways will be following. We can only hope, but for now, the Eggplant is a great start!

Looking at the construction of the shoe, Nike has focused on the little details, bringing back a tapered midsole foam, making it slimmer towards the toe. Followed by an encapsulated air bag in the forefoot for extra comfort and updated rubber traction for grip. In terms of materials, the colourway boasts a bright white mesh base, white laces and a matching nylon tongue. The white continues onto the overlays in soft and durable smooth synthetic leather. Light grey provides a second base colour for the eyestay, logo window, wedge, air bag and lining.

The smooth synthetic leather continues to cover the mudguard, this time in “Eggplant” purple which is also seen on the upper eyestay, backtab, and tongue logo, giving the shoe it’s name. ‘Flare’ pink hits the suede swoosh, back tab logo, tongue lining and forefoot tread, which stands out amongst the rest of the black and grey outsole. This unique tone of pink provides contrast against the dark purple and makes the shoe really pop.

The new/old and improved Air Max 90 Eggplant trainer will be releasing TOMORROW, Saturday 15th August 2020 at 8am (BST) for £129.95 in UK sizes 2.5-11.5 (so really not so much of a women’s exclusive). They’ll even be arriving in an OG Air Max box with throwback hang-tag (probably the most exciting part for any sneaker collectors). This trendy trainer definitely makes a statement and will likely prove popular with many. Not only for the style and the nostalgia but also for the well known comfort and ease of styling.
